We all know the kind of person who has a talent for making others feel miserable. You could share some great news, and they’ll turn it into something bleak.
Great news!
‚We’re growing rapidly!‘
‘The person’:
‘Yeah, well, good luck with that. You’ll never find enough staff to sustain it.’
But
Why are they often disliked? It’s not just because they spot negatives in positives. It’s more likely because they never spot positives in negatives. I mean, what do they say when you have some bad news? Yes, exactly:
‘Told you so.’
And?
Well, in the example, they were probably right—it is hard to find staff nowadays. They have a knack for spotting trouble that might make things worse.
So
Instead of just disliking them, it might be better to adopt a similar approach, but not just in a negative way. I suggest you always
find at least two positives in all negatives and vice versa.
You will not only be able to respond to ‘this person’ in a positive way,
you will be thinking a couple of steps ahead too.
(By the way, do yourself (and me) a favour and write them down. On paper. It will help you finish your thoughts instead of rushing through them.)
That’s all,
RvdL
