Find a compelling analogy"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4 id=\"ember4195\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__heading-3\">Recently,<\/h4>\n<p id=\"ember4196\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">while preparing a training session, I noticed that training has a lot in common with one of my hobbies: cooking. Here\u2019s what I mean:<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember4197\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">\u2022 <strong>Cooking:<\/strong> If you use too much salt, your dish becomes inedible. <strong>Training:<\/strong> If you make every topic seem \u2018crucial,\u2019 participants won\u2019t be able to discern what\u2019s important.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember4198\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">\u2022 <strong>Cooking:<\/strong> If you add too many ingredients, the dish turns into a mishmash. <strong>Training:<\/strong> If you cover too many topics, trainees will lose the overview.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember4199\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">\u2022 <strong>Cooking:<\/strong> If you serve overly large portions, you create mountains that your guests have to climb. <strong>Training:<\/strong> If you go into excessive detail, trainees will have to become hill-climbers too.<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"ember4200\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__heading-3\">Now,<\/h4>\n<p id=\"ember4201\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">let\u2019s say you\u2019re working on a proposal and there\u2019s a part you\u2019re struggling with. You notice you\u2019re having \u2018<em>mental cramps<\/em>\u2019\u2014which is itself an analogy for <em>tunnel vision<\/em>. And tunnel vision is, in turn, an analogy for staring at the same thing for too long, hoping it will change.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember4202\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\"><em>If you actively look for analogies, this process will naturally shift your thinking. <\/em><\/p>\n<p id=\"ember4203\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">When you find a good one, you might suddenly see the solution you\u2019ve been searching for.
